One day introduction to winter skills

Want to adventure into the Scottish hills in winter but not sure what you need and how to look after yourself safely? This one day course will set in the right direction and prepare you for anything the winter might offer.

We will look at route planning, weather and avalanche forecasts, equipment choice, using specialised winter equipment, basic navigation, emergency procedures and looking after yourself in the winter environment.

No experience is necessary and all technical equipment hire (boots/crampons/ice axes) can be organised. Just let us know in advance when you book.

Three day winter skills course

Already an experienced walker and ready to move your winter skills on to the next level? This is the course for you.

Over three days we will cover; in depth route choice and winter hazard evaluation both in planning and on the ground, ice axe self arrest, emergency shelter building, snowcraft, avalanche awareness and winter navigation strategies.

Five Day Advanced Winter Skills course

This is the course for those walkers and climbers who may have already done a basic winter skills course, their summer ML, or just have lots of unstructured winter experience and want to progress to a deeper understanding of operating in a winter environment.

We will cover advanced planning, avalanche awareness, advanced winter navigation (including low visibility or night navigation), snow-hole building, emergency shelters, emergency rope work and snow belays for mountaineering, looking after a group, safety on steep ground and personal skills.

Over the course of five days you will develop an excellent, consolidated knowledge and progression of winter skills. Five days will allow us to experience various areas of Scotland in the winter; Cairngorms based courses can visit the West coast for a day and vice versa.
